Mary Inez Jahnz, age 97 of Mapleton, formerly of Amboy died Oct. 12, 2020 at the Mapleton Community Home. Funeral Services will be held on Oct. 20, 2020 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amboy, MN officiated by Rev. Rudy Maurer. Visitation is at 1:00PM with the service at 2:00PM, both at the church. Burial will be at the Sterling Cemetery in rural Amboy after the service. Social distancing and masks to guard against Covid 19 will be observed.
Mary was born Dec. 31, 1922 to John and Inez (Lamp) Covey. She graduated from Amboy High School and completed Beauty School in Mankato. Mary worked in several beauty salons in the area; served as a nanny/housekeeper for Dr. Howard; worked as a cook for the Amboy school, Norman’s Restaurant in Amboy, and at The Junction restaurant in Mankato. She also worked several years as an assembler for Electrocraft in Winnebago. Mary raised five children with husband Walter. She was active in many areas of her church, serving as President of the Lutheran Ladies Guild for 6 years. She also was the President of the Amboy High School Band Mothers club and participated in their fundraisers. Mary had a kind heart and her house was the center of activity for many family gatherings and neighborhood kids. She always had time for troubled people and to give them a place to stay, something to eat and an ear to listen. Her special nickname, “Mary The Great” or “Grandma The Great”, was given to her by a great granddaughter who got mixed up as to which grandma to call her!
Mary is survived by one sister, Mildred Hill and two sisters-in-law, Arlys Black and Lillian Bode; her children: Mareda Butler (Chuck), Irene Erickson (Michael Warner), James Jahnz (Barbara) and Lorraine Berrevoets (Mike); 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Inez Covey; husband, Walter Jahnz; son, Howard Jahnz; brothers Charles, George and Richard Covey; and one sister, Ella Weerts.
