Winnebago

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joann Ruth Nichols, who left this world on January 9, 2026, at the age of 92.

Joann was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and spent her formative years in Delavan, where she attended country school until the 8th grade. She graduated from Winnebago High School in 1951, marking the beginning of a life filled with love, family, and purpose. On August 22, 1953, Joann married the love of her life, Dan, with whom she created a beautiful family comprising five devoted daughters.

As a skilled bookkeeper, she worked in various roles throughout her life, ultimately retiring from the Winnebago school system. Her dedication to her profession was only surpassed by her commitment to her family. After retiring, Joann and Dan embraced their passion for travel, exploring the beauty of the United States with the Holiday Rambler Camping Club. They also cherished precious moments camping with their grandchildren at Daly Park. Joann found joy in quilting and sewing, creating lasting memories and heirlooms that her family will treasure.

Joann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her most cherished moments were spent with her late husband Dan, who passed away in 2015, as well as with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joann is survived by her daughters; Nancy (Charles) Lewis of Owatonna, Shirley Cumberland of Sun City West, AZ, Susan (Dale) Benson of Forest City, IA, Jean (Darren) McGann of Faribault and Karen (Ben) Maes of Rochester. A special friend of the family, Lori (Babcock) Rauk of Forest City, IA, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, with one more due in March, her sister Florence Heyer of Titonka, IA as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dan, 2 grandchildren and son-in-law Curt Cumberland.
