Geraldine Schulz

January 19, 1942 — July 28, 2021

Geraldine “Gerry” Lucille (King) Schulz, 79, went to be with Jesus on July 28, 2021, passing away at the Mapleton Community Home. She is now free of pain.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Aug. 2, 2021, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amboy, with burial to follow in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Amboy. Rev. Rudy Maurer will officiate. Visitation will be 4-7p.m. Aug. 1, 2021 at the Spencer-Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gerry was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa, to William and Ruth King, the youngest of five. Gerry was her Dad’s “little peach,” gaining her the nickname of “Peach” to the King side of the family. Her mother died when Gerry was 7, and her dad later married Marian Rossman, and Gerry found herself with more sisters and a younger brother.

Gerry graduated from Ledyard (Iowa) High School and worked at Woolworth’s in Fairmont, Minn., before marrying Richard Schulz on Aug. 13, 1960, in Ledyard. The couple made their home in the rural Amboy area. Gerry settled into the role of housewife, farmwife, parts runner and meal deliverer, as well as a great mother to Greg and Kevin. Gerry’s strong faith guided her to serve St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as church secretary, Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher for many years.

Gerry enjoyed ceramics (every St. Paul’s Lutheran confirmand received a ceramic bust of Christ, made with love by Gerry), painting, needlework, cake decorating, silk flowers, sewing, word puzzles and collecting bells. Gerry and Richard enjoyed traveling, watching old movies, watching game shows and rooting for the Twins, Timberwolves, Vikings, Lynx and Gophers; as well as high school sports and activities of her sons and then her granddaughters. You knew when Gerry was in the stands.

Left to cherish Gerry’s memory are her husband, Richard; sons Greg (Deb) of Amboy, Minn., and Kevin (Carol) of Winnebago, Minn.; granddaughters, Gina (Peter) Schulz of Minneapolis; Kayla (Alex) Ekstrom of Truman, Minn.; Kristi (Eric) Van Otterloo of Lake Crystal, Minn.; Amber Schulz of St. Louis Park, Minn.; and Haley (John) Peake of Minong, Wis.; great-granddaughters, Olivia and Peyton Ekstrom; sisters, Marilyn (Sherwood) Vereide, of Austin, Minn., Denise (Donald) Funderburk, of St. Peters, Mo.; brother, Jim King, of Fayetteville, Texas; sisters-in-law, Carole King, of Chesapeake, Va., Darla Kopischke of Mankato, Minn., and Dee Waldron of St. Peter, Minn.; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Gerry is preceded in death by her mother and father; father-in-law and mother-in-law; stepmother; infant twin brother; infant son, Richard; sisters, Fran Garten and Kathy Gill; brothers, Dave King, Gary King and Don King; and numerous other relatives.

The family would like to thank the Mapleton Community Home staff for the great care and love they extended to our mother.

Gerry loved the color blue, so to honor her memory those attending the funeral are encouraged to wear something blue.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family asks that memorials be given in Gerry’s name to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
