February 12, 2009 Delavan Walter Hillard Abbas died February 12, 2009 at his residence. Memorial services will be held at Spencer-Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago on Sunday June 14, 2009 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Lora Sturm Officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Funeral Home. Walter H. Abbas was born October 26, 1924, in Lakota, Iowa, the son of Hillard and Freida (Nelson) Abbas. He attended school in Lakota and Delavan. Walt served as a Marine during World War II. After serving his country in the military, he married Marlene Ford of Longville, Minnesota on November 29, 1949. They raised four children, Susan, Donna, Mary and Walter Jr. in the Delavan, Amboy and Winnebago area. Walt started out as a farmer and then attended school in Chicago to become a diesel mechanic. Walt was the mechanic and a bus driver for the Delavan school district for over 10 years. After working for the school, Walt bought a garage in Delavan where he worked until retirement. Walter is survived by his wife Marlene of Delavan, son Walter Jr. (Joan) of St. Paul, and daughters Susan (Dennis) Rehbein of Oakdale, Donna (Bob) Bates of Chandler, Arizona, and Mary (Jeff) Penney of Eden Prairie. Walt is also survived by 11 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four sisters. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and an infant daughter.
