Melvin Carl Baumgard

MELVIN CARL BAUMGARD, age 89, of Vernon Center, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at Mapleton Community Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015, at 11:30 AM, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Vernon Center, with Rev. John Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, MN. Visitation time will be from 5-8 PM Thursday, May 21, at Spencer Owen Funeral Home, 345 6th Ave SE in Winnebago and one hour before the services on Friday at the church. Web tributes may be left at www.spencerowen.com. Melvin was born March 22, 1926, at Vernon Center, the son of Charles and Martha (Proehl) Baumgard. He and Dorothy Rose Starke were married on May 6, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Nicollet, MN. After their marriage they farmed the Baumgard homestead outside of Vernon Center. They were blessed with five children and 59 ½ years of marriage. Dorothy passed away November 14, 2012. Melvin enjoyed listening to polka music and going out to eat at the Dairy Queen. He also enjoyed going for rides with his children. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Bill) McDermott of Winnebago, Gary (Sharon) Baumgard of Vernon Center, Randy Baumgard of Waseca, Wayne (Cheryl) Baumgard of Mapleton, Darrell Baumgard of Amboy, daughter in law, Debra Baumgard of Lake Crystal, and eight grandchildren, Andrew, Kelly, Justin, Dustin, Chris, Amy, Lisa and Logan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 2012, parents, three sisters and a grandson, Adam Baumgard.
